Common questions related to Acupuncture
If you’re new to acupuncture, you are likely to have some questions in mind about the procedure and its effectiveness. Here are some common queries of potential patients seeking acupuncture treatment.
1. What happens in an acupuncture session?
At Coquitlam Wellness Centre, our certified acupuncturist will first have a detailed discussion with the patient regarding their health and medical history. In the first session, the therapist may do a physical assessment of the shape, coating, and colour of your tongue, and check your pulse rate, besides some other basic health checkups.
This assessment helps the acupuncturist to devise a suitable treatment plan for the patient, one that helps in addressing their specific condition.
A comfortable treatment table is laid out for the acupuncture treatment. The acupuncturist starts the treatment by stimulating select acupoints on different parts of your body. Most patients report minimal or zero discomfort during the treatment because our therapists are extremely gentle when placing the fine needles in your skin. These needles typically need to be retained in the body for a certain period of time (usually 5 to 30 minutes) before being taken out at which time they are safely discarded.
2. Are there any side effects of acupuncture?
When you get treatment from a reputed wellness centre such as CWC, you can enjoy complete peace of mind as far as the safety of treatment is concerned. Our trained acupuncturists have performed the treatment on many patients with varying degrees of pain, ailments and conditions. These sessions have proved to be extremely effective and free of any discomfort. In general, acupuncture has nearly no unwanted side effects. If a patient does feel any sort of mild discomfort, it will usually pass very quickly. Also, minor bruising due to needle insertion or a temporary flare-up of symptoms is natural and indicates that your “qi or ch’i” is getting cleared and the natural flow of your body is settling into equilibrium.
3. How many acupuncture treatments are required for experiencing pain relief?
Acupuncture does not work on a ‘one size fits all’ approach. At CWC, we assess each patient’s specific condition and decide on the number of sessions and the frequency of treatment.
While some people may feel a significant change in their body after the first treatment, others require a couple of sessions before experiencing relief. In general, patients with long-standing or complex chronic conditions need more sessions than those with moderate pain. We recommend at least one or two sessions per week for a couple of months.
Our acupuncturist will work to devise a customized treatment plan for you when you visit CWC. This plan will include the duration and frequency of treatments needed.
4. What specific conditions can acupuncture help treat?
Some of the major medical/health conditions addressed by acupuncture include the following:
Lower back pain
Hypotension and hypertension
Vomiting and nausea
5. Is Acupuncture Covered By My Benefits Plan?
Many group insurance and benefit plans offer full or partial coverage of Acupuncture treatment. At Coquitlam Wellness Centre, we offer direct billing with most providers and will ensure your benefits plan is utilized on your behalf. All you need to do is provide us with your policy information and we take care of the rest!
The increasing popularity of Acupuncture
Studies suggest that a variety of different TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) techniques including acupuncture are gaining increased popularity in the United States of America, and various Western Nations. The National Institute of Health conducted an extensive survey in 2007 on alternative health approaches and found that nearly 3.1 million Americans underwent acupuncture treatment that year. The survey also revealed that the number of people visiting acupuncturists rose by almost three times in the previous decade.
A majority of patients who visit the Coquitlam Wellness Centre are surprised to learn that despite the involvement of needles in an acupuncture session, this treatment is relatively pain-free. Further, the needles are actually helpful in relieving pain in various parts of the body without the use of any medication. This is why acupuncture is highly recommended for individuals who prefer non-drug/medication treatments for pain relief. It saves them from experiencing any unwanted side effects.
The certified acupuncturists at CWC administer a thorough assessment of factors such as their age, lifestyle, physiology, emotional health, and so on. This allows for the customization of the acupuncture treatment for maximum results. It is important to understand that a treatment which works for one individual might not work for the other, even if they suffer from the exact same condition. Our healthcare professionals take sufficient time in analyzing pre-existing medical conditions with every patient to ensure the acupuncture treatment is effective in relieving pain and addressing other specific problems.
We like our patients to be informed about the procedure and its safety before beginning treatment. The acupuncturists at CWC use only the highest quality Korean made, painless needles. For each session, new needles and alcohol wipes are used to help avoid any risks and keep the procedure hygienic and safe.
