WHY ACUPUNCTURE?

There are multiple advantages of getting an acupuncture treatment from a certified practitioner at Coquitlam Wellness Centre:

  • Helps in the relief of chronic pain; treatment of conditions such as back pain, headaches, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, and fibromyalgia.
  • Strengthening of the immune system, stress relief, better sleep, improved respiratory and digestive health, and increased emotional balance.
  • Cost-effective and customized pain relief treatment.
  • Long-term overall health benefits.
  • A very safe procedure with little to no side effects.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Asian healing therapy that involves stimulating certain body points using extremely thin needles. The acupuncturist will gently insert these needles into your skin and then use their hands or electrical stimuli for manipulating their movement. The ultimate objective of acupuncture therapy is to revitalize something known as the “qi or ch’i” in the Chinese language. This is the natural energy flow of the body.

Besides treating chronic pain, acupuncture is practiced for improving immunity and treating serious medical conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and fibromyalgia.

A research publishing in 2010 in the United States of America showed that the insertion of needles during an acupuncture session impacts adenosine activity. Adenosine is an amino acid that is activated in your skin post injury and helps reduce pain. Therefore, one of the most obvious benefits of acupuncture is pain relief. Western medical research has revealed acupuncture balances body energy, addresses various medical and lifestyle disorders, and has a significant impact on the overall health of an individual.

At Coquitlam Wellness Centre, our certified acupuncturist will first have a detailed discussion with the patient regarding their health and medical history. In the first session, the therapist may do a physical assessment of the shape, coating, and colour of your tongue, and check your pulse rate, besides some other basic health checkups.

This assessment helps the acupuncturist to devise a suitable treatment plan for the patient, one that helps in addressing their specific condition.

A comfortable treatment table is laid out for the acupuncture treatment. The acupuncturist starts the treatment by stimulating select acupoints on different parts of your body. Most patients report minimal or zero discomfort during the treatment because our therapists are extremely gentle when placing the fine needles in your skin. These needles typically need to be retained in the body for a certain period of time (usually 5 to 30 minutes) before being taken out at which time they are safely discarded.

When you get treatment from a reputed wellness centre such as CWC, you can enjoy complete peace of mind as far as the safety of treatment is concerned. Our trained acupuncturists have performed the treatment on many patients with varying degrees of pain, ailments and conditions. These sessions have proved to be extremely effective and free of any discomfort. In general, acupuncture has nearly no unwanted side effects. If a patient does feel any sort of mild discomfort, it will usually pass very quickly. Also, minor bruising due to needle insertion or a temporary flare-up of symptoms is natural and indicates that your “qi or ch’i” is getting cleared and the natural flow of your body is settling into equilibrium.

Acupuncture does not work on a ‘one size fits all’ approach. At CWC, we assess each patient’s specific condition and decide on the number of sessions and the frequency of treatment.

While some people may feel a significant change in their body after the first treatment, others require a couple of sessions before experiencing relief. In general, patients with long-standing or complex chronic conditions need more sessions than those with moderate pain. We recommend at least one or two sessions per week for a couple of months.

Our acupuncturist will work to devise a customized treatment plan for you when you visit CWC. This plan will include the duration and frequency of treatments needed.

Some of the major medical/health conditions addressed by acupuncture include the following:
